Sister council, the Girl Scouts of Western New York, will have actress America Ferrera as the guest speaker at its Women of Distinction Awards presentation on September 15. Ferrera has been named one of Time Magazine’s “Most Influential People in the World” and is the star of ABC’s “Ugly Betty.”
Prior to delivering her speech, she will lead a Girls’ Forum to discuss the media’s impact on body image issues among girls and women.
In 2002, Ferrera starred in her first film, “Real Women Have Curves,” and the Disney Channel’s “Gotta Shake It Up!” In both motion pictures, her character is faced with the challenge of overcoming obstacles in order to pursue passions, which is something she says she has experienced in real life.
“We’re not all a size 2 and we’re not all a size 0,” she says. “For me, it’s not about looking like a supermodel. It’s about feeling good about who I am, naturally.”
The Women of Distinction ceremony will honor nine women for their dedication to mentoring girls and young women.
The event is taking place at the Radisson Hotel, Rochester Riverside. Tickets are $100 per person or $75 per registered Girl Scout.
