Three Things for Thursday

By Lisa Kaminski; Manager, Community Development

Girl Scout destinations are your passport to travel. They are trips that range anywhere from 2-21 days and are open to girls ages 11-17. They allow girls to develop leadership skills, gain confidence, and enjoy a valuable learning opportunity, while experiencing an unforgettable trip!

Girl Scouts of NYPENN Pathways currently has 3 girls that have been selected for Destinations. One girl will be visiting China and two girls are heading to Germany.

Here are three destinations that are available to girls.

Amazon Adventure: Peru (Girl Scout Destination)

This expedition combines science, cross-cultural exchange, leadership development and service, providing a truly unforgettable experience. Your 10 day adventure begins in the city of Iquitos where you will be greeted by Peruvian scouts and spend an afternoon sharing your culture with one another. At each location, you’ll experience the rich diversity through different hands-on workshops designed to teach you new things while at the same time providing the most fun of your entire life!

Andes Trek: Peru (Girl Scout Destination)

This 11-day expedition begins in the city of Cusco, the historic capital of the Inca Empire, where you will be welcomed with traditional coca tea. Spend the first 3 days getting familiar with the region by visiting a traditional weaving school, handicraft markets, Inca ruins and local schools. The next four days you’ll explore the Andes by foot. The Lares Trek is more remote than the classic Inca Trail, and offers insight into the real lives of the Andean farmer, dressed in their traditional brightly colored ponchos, and provides a stunning and challenging adventure. You’ll be joined by llamas, alpacas and a team of guides who all help carry gear so you only have to carry your day pack. During the trek, some days will be long and challenging and others will be shorter and easier. You will learn, laugh, lead and live life fully… returning home ready to act. To complete your experience, you’ll design a follow-up leadership project that takes your trip to a whole new level!

Canyon Skies: U.S. Southwest (Girl Scouts of Colorado trip open up to all Girl Scouts now)

The stunning scenery of the Southwestern U.S. never fails to awe and inspire those who take the time to discover its riches. This region, known as the Four Corners, showcases dramatic geologic formations and sits at a crossroads of American Indian, Spanish and American cultures. As a testament to the unique combination of natural and cultural history in the region, the Colorado Plateau boasts the country’s highest concentration of National Parks and Monuments. Raft the San Juan River, explore spectacular National Monuments, and visit the Navajo Nation, the largest American Indian reservation in the country. There’s no better place to contemplate your place in the universe than under the desert sky’s magnificent canvas of stars.
