Girl Scouts from nine troops in the Penn Yan/Dundee Service Unit recently held an encampment at Camp Hoover in Tully, and as service unit manager Missy Blauvelt says, “the girls had the time of their lives!”
Despite the fact that it sprinkled and rained the entire weekend, the girls were able to take part in many activities including an opening flag ceremony and a round robin style activity day with stations for swimming, slip and slide, crafts, a Leave No Trace workshop, hiking, sports, and relay games. The girls even received a lesson in cooking with a dutch oven over an open fire. Each girl also made their own ice cream in a bag to go with their dutch oven desserts.
“I have to say we loved everything about Camp Hoover,” Missy said. “The location is only a few minutes from the main highway so it is easy to find, the facilities were clean, beautiful, and wonderfully taken care of, the space is laid out nicely for easy movement from different camping and lodge areas, the swimming facilities were fantastic with the dock and roped off swimming areas, and the game room provided us with everything we needed to do relay games, slip and slide, cup stacking races, and hula hoops. The highlight of the stay was the Ranger. Ranger John was kind and extremely helpful. He made sure that each camp had lanterns ready for our use, fire starters, and bleach and garbage bags. He visited us several times during the weekend to make sure we’re doing alright.”
Missy says she knows there are individual troops in the service unit that are planning on reserving stays at Camp Hoover again and she plans on suggesting Camp Hoover for their encampment next year as well.
