“She has blossomed because of Girl Scouts,” Elaina’s mom Heather said.
Elaina, from Ogdensburg Cadette Troop 50204, was very shy. So much so that she would only join Girl Scouts if her mom agreed to go and stay the entire time. She didn’t even want her mom out of her sight.
That was 5 years ago. And now?
“She has gone to week long sleep-over camp, first in Harrisville and then in Ithaca!” Heather said.
She has also completed her Girl Scout Bronze Award and is working towards her Girl Scout Silver Award.
“If it had not been for Girl Scouts she would have never considered doing this pageant,” Heather said.
The pageant is the state leg of the National American Miss. Elaina was chosen to compete based on a series of interviews with national pageant officials last month. Contestants compete in four categories: Formal Wear Modeling, Personal Introduction, Interview, and Community Service Project. The emphasis is placed on the importance of gaining self-confidence and learning new skills, such as good attitudes about competitions, as well as setting and achieving personal goals.
“She is excited about the pageant because it is focused on the inside of the girl instead of just the outside. It is not a beauty pageant but a growing confidence pageant,” Heather said.
Elaina will head to Rochester to compete in the pageant August 27-29. The winner will go on to compete at the National American Miss pageant in Disneyland, California later this year.
