It is that time of year again. Spring and summertime often mean that girls and troops may be asked to participate in community parades. Girl Scouts of NYPENN Pathways has a short and snappy training for volunteers planning on taking their troops to participate in parades.
Parades are a great way for the residents of your town, village or city to see that there are Girl Scouts in their community. Chambers of Commerce might request that Girl Scouts participate in local parades, or a council staff person may get notifications or requests for participants from various organizations and agencies especially around major holidays.
If you are asked to participate in the parade there are a few things that need to be considered before you agree to participate:
1. Is the location accessible to all participants in the group?
2. Is it appropriate to the girls in your group?
3. Are restrooms available?
4. Proximity to medical facilities
When using floats at parades follow the following guidelines:
1. Automobile insurance is covering the trucks and automobiles that are drawing floats
2. Construction of the float is safe
3. Use non-toxic or highly flammable materials
4. Body of float is secured to the vehicle
5. Portable ABC fire extinguishers are aboard the float
6. Secure seating is available for riders on floats or a secure handhold/safety harness if standing
7. Participants do not walk close to moving floats
8. An adult accompanies girls on any moving float
9. Nothing is distributed to onlookers from a moving vehicle or float
Volunteers should refer to the safety activity checkpoints for all of the guidelines.
