Memorial Day – The unofficial start to the summer season. A chance to get out your flip flops, jump into the lake or pool, and have fun with family and friends. But Memorial Day is really about remembering those who have died serving our country in the United States military.
So, here are three ways you can celebrate Memorial Day the Girl Scout way:
Does your town have a monument honoring those who serve our country? Have your troop make wreaths to display at the monument. Plan and hold a ceremony to place the wreaths on the monument and involve the community.
Participate in your community’s Memorial Day parade. Wear your uniform proudly!
Take a field trip with your troop – to Waterloo, NY. Did you know that Waterloo is the birthplace of Memorial Day? And that this year is the 150th anniversary of the holiday to reflect on those who have died serving our country? Each year the village plans activities for the entire weekend to celebrate this holiday. And did you know that Waterloo, NY is in the GSNYPENN council jurisdiction? What an amazing trip for Girl Scouts to take!
